Culture, Colors, and Cuisine in Cusco, Peru

Cusco was our before-and-after Machu Picchu stopping place, as it is for most travelers who visit the area. There is so much to do and see in Cusco. So, we were glad that we had a couple days dedicated to exploring this vibrant city.

We were pretty weary from our overnight flight when we first arrived in Cusco. After dropping our bags at our hotel and grabbing a bit of lunch, we took our time wandering around the Plaza de Armas and popping into a few little shops. But, truthfully, we really just wanted to get into our room and collapse.

When we were able to check-in, we were escorted to our room and provided with a brief tour of the hotel property and amenities. Everything about this hotel is so beautiful and so well done. From the pisco sours at reception to the furnishings, art, and courtyard, we were truly impressed.

The Belmond Monisterio is a protected national monument that includes the adjacent San Antonio de Abad Chapel. A stay here is so much more than the beautiful accommodations. In retrospect, I am so pleased that we chose this hotel for our first night in Cusco. We really needed the rest and tranquility to prepare for the activities we had planned for the coming days.

The following morning, we had reservations for the Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu. When we arrived at the train depot, we were entertained by live Peruvian music and dancing as we found our seats and awaited departure.

Once on board the Hiram Bingham, we knew this would be an unforgettable experience. The carriage interiors and dining service were akin to a fine dining restaurant — just on a train! The train chugga-chugged along as if out for a leisurely Sunday drive — nothing like the high speed rail trains. It is very easy to get up and and move about, or even walk through the other carriages.

About 30 minutes into our journey, our locomotive broke down and we were stuck waiting on PeruRail to delivery a replacement. It took a while. Thankfully, we didn’t have any other scheduled tour times to make except the one included in our train fare. So, we just hung out with our fellow stranded passengers and enjoyed the bar, live music, and our wonderful lunch.

Although we did not have a perfect trip, I don’t regret it at all. We were just a tad unlucky – lol. On to explore amazing Machu Picchu for a couple days and then return back to Cusco.

A complete post of our visit to Machu Picchu and Huana Picchu can be found here.

When we returned to Cusco after two incredible days in Machu Picchu, we decided to stay at the JW Marriott El Convento. The location was key and the property had historical importance. We thought it looked special and we were right:)

Cusco has an abundance of local and handmade artisan goods that you can shop for in the street markets and in the high end boutique shops. There is so much variety to fit every budget. I loved it all and came back with my carry-on luggage stuffed full.
